KEN MARGOLIS ASSOCIATES

Ken Margolis Associates (KMA) was founded in January 1994, specializing in advertising sales, marketing consulting, and high-tech public relations. Soon after the initial success of the business, Ken focused the company's business on selling online advertising, providing Internet-related consulting services, and helping companies design and implement Internet promotions. As one of the oldest companies in this field, KMA remains a leader in the industry.

  • Their Needs:

KMA was looking for a reliable company to manage their UNIX based ad servers and help them grow their business. Their goals for growth included increasing the amount of ad banners they could serve each day, plus they wanted to make the environment more fault-tolerant. They have a long term goal of increasing redundancy of the servers by placing them in geographically diverse locations.

    Our Solution:

IDDG manages KMA's servers along with the ad serving software KMA is using (Open Ad Stream from RealMedia).

IDDG proposed adding additional servers to allow KMA to serve more ad banners to their internet clients. We then put those servers behind our Foundry Networks Server Iron load balancing switch to allow KMA to continue serving ads without any interruption of service due to a server failure. The Server Iron detects entire server failures and failures of the ad server software as well and will stop sending traffic to that machine within a few seconds. It will keep the machine marked offline until it detects both the machine and the web server are responding to its requests, at which time it will put the server back into the load balancing rotation.

In the future when KMA is ready to put additional servers in a different city, state, or part of the county then IDDG will be able to provide load balancing not only between the servers in a single data center, but also between data centers by using Server Iron switches at each location. We will load balance the servers at each site, and then we will load balance the Server Iron switches together. In the event an entire data center goes offline all traffic will be routed to any remaining data centers.
